Korean Directors Take on STAR WARS

Hong Sangsoo

Key Films: Virgin Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, 2000; Hahaha, 2009; Right Now, Wrong Then, 2015

Episode VIII: A squad of Stormtroopers and a ragtag band of rebels strand themselves at a planet strikingly resembling an East Coast Korean town. They dine on exotic marine life like dried squid and drink boxes and boxes of soju, and have long dialogue exchanges on many topics, mostly about women. The local creatures are all female and played by beautiful internationally renowned actresses. Each character speaks his own language/dialect including broken English but there are no subtitles.

Result: French and Korean critics declare it the best STAR WARS film ever made.
