Top Korean Films of 2013

7. Koala

Though it had its premiere at the Seoul Independent Film Festival in December 2012, Koala has had so little exposure since then I felt it deserved a slot on this year’s list. A genial film with a clean aesthetic and a soundly told story, a masterpiece it may not be, but this debut had me hooked from start to finish.

Its tale of young friends who take a chance on starting their own business is engaging and relatable. The stakes may not be terribly high but if only more filmmakers could get the basics right like Kim Joo-hwan then what a wonderful thing that would be.
