Thank you for your patience! (28.05.2013)

The section is reserved for information on upcoming Korean releases in various stages of production.

Currently detailed information is available through the end of August, with the rest to be updated soon.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Many thanks to the wonderful AsianWiki and HanCinema databases which are enormously useful resources for this feature.

June

Secretly, Greatly

Director:  Jang Cheol-soo
Cast:  Kim Soo-hyun, Lee Hyun-woo, Park Ki-woong, Son Hyun-joo, Park Hye-sook, Kim Sung-gyoon, Ko Chang-seok
Release Date:  June 5

Three top North Korean operatives, all very young, are stationed undercover in small neighborhood in South Korea. Disguised as the village idiot, a wannabe idol and a high school student, they pretend to live their lives as the youth they are as they await orders from the North.

Following his blistering debut Bedevilled (2010), Jang Cheol-soo returns for his sophomore work. A much more commercially oriented project for major distributor Showbox, the film is a comedy-drama with action and thriller elements starring a trio of young stars including the redhot Kim Soo-hyun. Early word from the first press screening has been negative but hopefully the film can still display some of Jang's ample strengths behind the camera.

Horror Stories II

Director:  Jeong Beom-sik, Kim Hwi, Kim Sung-ho, Min Kyu-dong
Cast:  Park Sung-woong, Lee Se-young, Sung Joon, Lee Soo-hyuk, Baek Jin-hee, Kim Seul-gi, Jung In-sun, Ko Gyung-pyo, Kim Ji-won
Release Date:  June 5

Manager Park brings Se-young, who can communicate with the dead. Much like last year's original, this story serves as the linking devices bringing together short horrors that make up these old cases. Horror Stories didn't rock the world but it had some strong moments, including an excellent entry from Jeong Beom-sik, who is thankfully back for the sequel.

Mai Ratima

Doctor

Director:  Kim Sung-hong
Cast:  Kim Chang-wan, Bae So-eun, Seo Geun-woo, Han Da-eun
Release Date:  June 20

A plastic surgeon goes on the rampage, conducting unspeakable experiments on his female victims.

Kim Sung-hong previously helmed Missing (2009), a violent and frankly misogynistic film that was liked by some and derided by others. His latest received a gala premiere at last year's Busan International Film Festival but sadly MKC missed it during the week. Elizabeth Kerr of THR referred to it as 'an ultra-violent, if creative, Korean plastic surgery horor-thriller' while Variety's Maggie Lee called it 'inferior to the most pedestrian K-horror.'

A Wedding Invitation

Director:  Oh Gi-hwan
Cast:  Bai Bai He, Eddie Peng
Release Date:  June 20

After five years, a couple break up to pursue their separate careers, promising to get back together five more years later. Of course, things don't go as planned.

CJ Entertainment's first fully financed effort for the Chinese market, A Wedding Invitation was a big success on the mainland in April. After numerous less successful international ventures, this could signal a major change in how Korean studios conduct business.

A Puppet

Director:  Jang Cheol-soo
Cast:  Kim Soo-hyun, Lee Hyun-woo, Park Ki-woong, Son Hyun-joo, Park Hye-sook, Kim Sung-gyoon, Ko Chang-seok
